This section of the Jôban-sen suffered tremendous damage by the earthquake and the following Tsunami of March 11, 2011. The Tsunami triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, in the wake of which the line between Hisanohama and Haranomachi had to be closed as it passed through off-limits areas. It was not until March 14, 2020 that full operation could be resumed; the last section reopened being Tomioka to Namie.
