JR West Japan (JR Nishi Nihon) operates JR trains on the Japanese main island (Honshû) in the three regions Chûgoku, Kinki and Hokuriku. In the east, JR West Japan borders onto the area covered by JR Tôkai, in Hokuriku there are borders with JR East Japan. The Tôkaidô Shinkansen from Tokyo is operated by JR Tôkai and runs through into Ôsaka (Shin Ôsaka station). The Sanyô Shinkansen of JR West Japan runs into Hakata station in the city of Fukuoka on the southern island of Kyûshû and operates a local service from there into the yard at Hakata Minami (for this line see JR Kyûshû).

JR West Japan lines are presented here in three sections:

A   Chûgoku (including Hyôgo Prefecture)
(Note: Hyôgo Prefecture is actually the westernmost prefecture
         in the Kinki region.
B   Kinki
         (excluding Hyôgo Prefecture)
C   Hokuriku
