Tôkyô To’ei Chikatetsu – Ôedo-sen 大江戸線

Ô-Edo-sen (“Greater Edo Line”, Edo being the old name for Tôkyô until 1868) (hereafter spelt Ôedo-sen)

1435 mm gauge, overhead current collection (direct current 1500 V). The trains are driven by linear induction motor and run on steel wheels. This contrasts with conventional trains utilising rotary motors. The Ôedo-sen has very sharp curves and steep grades and - thanks to the linear motor propulsion - is built to a loading gauge which is considerably smaller than that of “normal” lines, including underground lines. The line starts in the northwest of Tôkyô at 1 Hikarigaoka and runs down to Shinjuku, where it has its main station by the Tôkyô Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁, Tôkyô Tochô). Accordingly, the station is named 11 Tochô-mae (“In front of the Tochô). From 11 Tochô-mae onward the Ôedo-sen is a circle line, running right round the city until it ends back at 11 Tochô-mae. The train reverses here for the return run to 1 Hikarigaoka via 27 Ryôgoku, 17 Azabu Jûban, and 11 Tochô-mae. Length: 40, 7 km.

The Ôedo-sen is not compatible with other underground lines and its trains are not joined to other company’s networks.
